A Guide to the Different Types of Air Conditioners

Looking at the different types of air conditioners is a smart way to find out how you can beat the heat in Asheville, NC, without breaking the bank. Some air conditioners use more energy than others, which can increase your monthly bills. Here’s a guide to the different types of air conditioners available to homeowners.

Single-Stage Air Conditioners

One of the more common options for Asheville, NC, homeowners looking to save money is a single-stage air conditioner. It only has two settings: on and off. You need to turn the system on to cool your home and shut it down when it reaches the temperature you want.

A single-stage AC system does an adequate job of improving your indoor air quality but may not help as much as you want. You’ll also find that it’s fairly loud and doesn’t do the best job of removing humidity. Don’t forget that it’ll use more energy than others.

Variable-Speed AC Systems

A variable-speed air conditioners give you more control over the settings and allow you to adjust the temperature as needed. It’ll cycle between settings and adjust the amount of energy needed to keep your Asheville, NC, home at the temperature you want. You may like how much the humidity level drops, too.

This type of AC system often costs more in the beginning but saves you money in the future. You may even notice a reduction in your energy bills the first few months after your AC installation.

Two-Stage Options

You’ll also find some two-stage options that are between single-phase and variable-speed systems. This type of air conditioner comes with a compressor that reduces your energy usage as the temperature reaches the level you want. The system doesn’t need to shut itself on and off multiple times during the day like single-stage models do.

If you set the temperature to 75 degrees, the AC system will turn on at around 77-78 degrees and then reduce its load as the temperature drops. You can save quite a bit of money choosing a two-stage AC system over a single-stage air conditioner.

Ductless Mini-Split Systems

Many air conditioners require ducts to transport air around your home. Ductless mini-splits can save some space and money because they don’t need any ducts. This type of AC system is easy to install, too.

The air conditioner has both a compressor and a condenser as well as air blowers. With this type of AC system, you can install one indoor air handler in each room or in shared spaces.

Though not as popular as some of the other types, geothermal cooling is an option for Asheville, NC, residents. This system consists of pipes installed under your house that fluid moves through. The fluid uses thermal energy to cool your home.

One thing to know about geothermal cooling is that it’s quite expensive. You need to hire a team who can install the pipes and fit the system to your home.

Floor-Mounted Air Conditioning

If you worry about AC systems that take up a lot of valuable interior or exterior space, a floor-mounted AC system might be a good choice for you. Though similar to a ductless mini-split system, this type mounts right on the floor and can fit against any wall. You just need six inches of space below it.

Many pros recommend these systems for smaller Asheville, NC, homes. You should consider some of the downsides though. This type of AC system cannot cool a big space and may not work as well as you would like because of furniture and other obstacles in the area.
